Our
Story
12 Owls Advertising Agency CC was conceptualised in 2002, with the first hard-copy directory publication distributed in March 2003 in Lenasia.
The business is a 100% Black female-owned enterprise. The concept was born out of a need identified in the local advertising market, where existing hard-copy business directories in Lenasia were predominantly printed in black and white or with limited spot colours. A gap was recognised for a high-quality, full-colour advertising publication that would better showcase local businesses and their offerings.
As a result, the 12 Owls Lenasia Directory was created – a full-colour, full-gloss, magazine-style annual directory featuring vibrant images of advertisers’ products, services, and logos. True to the adage, “A picture is worth a thousand words,” the directory introduced a new dynamic to traditional print advertising by providing businesses with a visually engaging platform to market themselves.
The inaugural edition consisted of 48 pages. Since then, the 12 Owls Lenasia Directory has grown significantly and now boasts over 212 pages from cover to cover.
The directory concept has also expanded beyond Lenasia into selected areas of Soweto through the 12 Owls Lenzweto Business Directory, which is currently in its seventh year of publication. Further expansion into additional Soweto regions is envisioned in the future.

Recognising the shift towards digital media, 12 Owls has also developed an online platform through the 12 Owls Online Directory, enabling businesses and consumers to connect through electronic channels and digital advertising solutions.

The number 12 represents the twelve working months of the year, symbolising continuous commitment and dedication to our clients.
The Owl represents the many late nights and long hours required in the advertising industry. Much like the owl, which is active during the night, we remain vigilant and dedicated to ensuring the success of our clients’ advertising campaigns.
Furthermore, the owl is renowned for its ability to turn its head almost 360 degrees, symbolising awareness, adaptability, and the constant search for opportunities. These qualities embody our approach to business and our commitment to helping clients grow and succeed.
